The Left and Right Hand Pinot Noirs represent the different personalities of the winemaking team in both vineyard and winery. Left-Handed winemaker Briony Carnachan (logical, creative and precise) and right handed Vigneron Paddy Borthwick (intuitive, impulsive and thoughtful) have each selected a premium parcel of grapes they believe to be the finest expression of the Borthwick Estate Vineyard. Applying their own individual winemaking nuances, with much tasting, lively debate, and careful barrel selection, Briony and Paddy have produced two distinct wines of 1730 bottles each. Produced in only the best seasons, these wines display expressions of Pinot Noir as much as the winemakers themselves.
The Borthwick Right Hand Pinot Noir is 100% French oak aged for 11 months with a mixture of selected cooperages of which 40% of the barrels are new.
The Borthwick Right Hand Pinot Noir has a bouquet of boysenberries, ripe cherries, thyme and toasted nut. A core of sweet plum, cloves and wild herbs are supported by bright fruit and French oak that complement spicy nuances with finely integrated fruit tannins.
"Aromas of a complex wine with a stony mineral led quality followed by scents of dark cherry and baked plum then sweetness of barrel and a fine smoky wood quality. Dark rose and clove, plum and vanilla, there’s a fine silica and saline quality to the sense of place this wine carries as well. On the palate - taut and youthful, salivating and texture, complex and fine. A delicious wine with velvet textured tannin, plenty of acidity and a core flavours of red berries, plum then wood spices and sense of place with a earthy mineral quality. Lengthy finish with charm and cmplexity. Best drinking from 2023 through 2033." - Cameron Douglas, MS, 95 points
