Named after a lake high in the hills surrounding the Marlborough's Wairau Plains, Lake Chalice Wines grew from a friendship between viticulturist Phil Binnie and founder Chris Gambitsis. Their ruggedly stony 27-acre Falcon Vineyard, part of the famous Rapaura District of Marlborough’s Wairau Plain, produces small quantities of intensely flavored fruit that are carefully crafted into a range of delicious, character-filled wines that emphasize depth and length of flavour.
The company's first vineyard was named the Falcon, and the native New Zealand Falcon, or Karearea, features on the label. The Karearea is very rare and confined to habitat in the mountainous areas of New Zealand, including Marlborough. In a country which had no land based mammals prior to the arrival of man, the Karearea was the top predator of the sky. Fearless and flying above the rest, the Karearea signifies how the Lake Chalice team feels about their wines.
Today, Lake Chalice Wines is owned by the Ibbotson Family who are respected early mavericks of Marlborough and renowned for a down to earth wine philosophy.
