Kiuchi Sake Brewery began brewing sake in Hitachi Province in 1823. In the past, Japan was under strict liquor laws which only allowed large companies to brew beer. However, deregulation allowed small-scale beer brewing, and Kiuchi Brewery set out to brew beer. In 1996 they brewed their first beer using traditional ale methods, creating Hitachino Nest Beer after 18 months of planning. A year later, its Amber Ale won top honours at Japan’s first international beer contest, launching exports abroad. By 2008 Kiuchi expanded with a new beer facility at Nukata to meet global demand and grew the Hitachino lineup. The Owl logo is now a distinctive label that conveys exceptional artesanal beer quality.
