Domaine de Bargylus is situated in war torn Syria and has been coined “the most dangerous winery in the world”. Making wine in Syria is a real challenge given the lack of wine culture and infrastructure. The task became more difficult with the breaking out of the war in Syria. Beside the security problems, the winery faces a logistical hassle: Harvesting is done over the phone by the winery owners living across the border in Lebanon. Grape samples are sent by taxi for tasting in Beirut in order to determine the harvesting dates for each parcel; laboratory tests are made outside the country; exporting of the wines is also an extremely complex process; etc….
Jancis Robinson MW described the winery as making “arguably the finest wine of the Eastern Mediterranean” and she’s right. Bargylus ticks the box on top notch winemaking. The winery makes only 2 wines with very unassuming names; Bargylus White and Bargylus Red. For Vivino fans, the Bargylus White is rated 4.0 points and the Bargylus Red is rated 4.2 points.
