Bodegas Alto Moncayo is one of the most prominent Spanish producer of the Garnacha wine. The winery is located in the Campo de Borja DO, geographically located within Aragona. The winery has a number of individual vineyard plots of different soil types that hover between 300m and 800m above sea level, with rainfall varying between 250mm and 350mm. These plots collectively yield 60+ individual expressions of the Garnacha grape, which are then blended according to Chris Ringland’s direction. Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a joint project of a few partners and Chris Ringland, the Barossa based owner/winemaker of Chris Ringland Shiraz fame.

Bodegas Alto Moncayo was established in 2002 with the first release of the Alto Moncayo and Acquilon in the same year. The idea then was to make two 100% Garnacha based wines. One was the Alto Moncayo that bore the name of the winery and designated flagship label for Bodegas Alto Moncayo. The other was Aquilon which was intended to showcase Bodegas Alto Moncayo’s finesse and to be made from a selection of the best plots and barrels of each vintage.

In 2003, one year after the first commercial release, a relatively difficult harvest highlighted character differences in the plots. Chris and his partners realised that some of these plots were producing Garnacha grapes that favoured a more softer, fruit forward style rather than the full trottled style of Alto Moncayo and Aquilon which would benefit from long term cellaring. A third label Veraton was created to introduce a wine that caters to early drinking.
