Donkiesbaai on the West Coast of South Africa has been the vacation home to the Engelbrecht family for four generations. For many it is a harsh, desert-like, unknown frontier, but for those who have experienced its energy and unspoilt natural beauty, it becomes a life-enriching place to be. Crayfish, harders and a cold glass of Steen (Chenin Blanc) is part of the history and Jean Engelbrecht produces the perfect wine to go with.
Steen is the South African moniker for Chenin Blanc. Only 1200 cases of Donkiesbaai Steen is produced a year. A subtle floral fragrance of frangipani provides a top note to intense fruity aromas of citrus with lots of white peaches, nectarine, and white pineapple. The intensity of fruit follows through on the palate, uplifted by racy acidity. Flavours of lemon and lime are more prominent, with cape gooseberry, pineapple, peach and creamy texture of lemon curd providing body. Fresh, layered and balanced with a dry yet textured mouth-feel and a zesty citrus finish.

The Donkiesbaai Steen is perfect with shellfish, spicy food, Lean fish, Mild and soft cheese.

Steen (Chenin Blanc) is a highly underrated South African wine. It is often overshadowed by blockbuster reds that come out from the best wineries in the country. In our opinion, rather than Pinotage which is seen as a South African special, we say give Steen a go. The Donkiesbaai Steen is a classy Chenin Blanc. Shy at first, the wine opens up to offer layers of peach and honey, which is wonderfully supported by an underlying lemon-like backbone. It is a very versatile wine that goes well with curries and spicy food and is absolutely magical with shellfish. Production of the Donkiesbaai Steen is limited and for the price, it offers a lot of value. The average Vivino rating for this wine is above 4.0.
