Slate Plate Care Tips. As slate is a porous material, food grease can get into the layer. To keep the plate grease stain free, wash it with dish detergent and warm water immediately after use. If stains persist, mix vinegar and water in equal parts and wipe mixture onto the plate. Rinse off after 15 minutes. Handle the plate with care. Do not put it in a dishwasher as it is brittle.
