The 2017 Dom Perignon release marks one of the most exclusive and captivating chapters in Dom Pérignon’s history. Sourced from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards across Champagne, including the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs, and Vallée de la Marne, each Dom Perignon release expresses the character of the vintage rather than a single site.

Vintage 2017 challenged the whole Champagne region with stark climatic extremes very similar to 2005 and 2010. A warm spring followed by torrential late summer rains. To give some background info, warm spring triggers early budburst and rapid vine growth. The vines bloom early, setting a crop that matures on an accelerated timeline which stunts flavour compound development. Late summer torrential rains right as the grapes enter véraison (ripening) causes the vines to gorge on water. The grape berries swell rapidly, diluting their sugar concentrations, acid balance, and aromatic compounds. As the skins swell rapidly from excess water, the tight clusters split open and create the perfect breeding ground for rot. Rot spreads rapidly through whole vineyard blocks, ruining flavour precursors and introducing off flavours.

In 2017, Pinot Noir (being a tightly clustered berry bunch) suffered but Grand Cru Chardonnay thrived. The Dom Perignon crew worked hard to harvest quickly and employed strict sorting to select only healthy fruit. Chef de Cave Vincent Chaperon made a rigorous selection, relying heavily on Chardonnay to forge a vintage defined by tension, energy, and unexpected structural weight. The final assemblage comprises 61% Chardonnay and 39% Pinot Noir, the highest Chardonnay proportion in Dom Perignon since 1970.

In adversity though, good things happen. The 2017 vintage has emerged as a Champagne of exceptional precision, energy, and individuality. Reminiscent of the celebrated 1970 and 2005 vintages, it combines depth and intensity with Dom Perignon’s signature balance and completeness. The 2017 opens with aromas of wet limestone, jasmine, and citrus peel before expanding into a creamy, layered mid-palate driven by vibrant acidity and a lingering, saline finish. Wine critics love the wine obviously.

“A sort of mini-2002… a Champagne of textural richness and resonance… creamy, voluptuous contours… a wild, exotic Dom Pérignon.” - Vinous (Antonio Galloni), 97 Points

“Deeper and more structurally endowed… orange peel, dried apricot, toasted hazelnut and cacao… marked by the house’s signature smoky reduction.” - Wine Advocate (Kristaps Karklins), 95+ Points

Serve the 2017 at 11°C alongside pan-seared scallops, roasted turbot, or aged through 2038 to allow its mineral depth to fully open.

The 2017 vintage is an extraordinarily rare, low-yield release representing one of the most limited allocations of the decade.
