Summer is upon us. These are many ways to beat the heat, but I find none more pleasurable than having a good book in my hand and a bottle of chilled Rose close by.
As far as Roses go, no winemaking group collectively captures worldwide attention as much as the guys from Provence. With nearly 90% of its total production in Rose wines, it is not an exaggeration to call this region in the south of France the Land of Roses and its makers the acolytes of this style.
Contrary to what some people think, it is actually quite difficult to make a good Rose. Winemakers have to seek a balance across multiple factors. Getting optimum ripeness in the fruits so that the wines have sufficient body to pair with lightly grilled meats and fish. At the same time, colours and flavours have to be extracted at the right levels so that the wines attain a nice pink tinge and feel delicate on the palate, yet do not taste like a watered down red wine.
A lot of Roses in the market unfortunately miss the mark. Good Roses are what I call “serious fun” wines. They are not made for mere quaffing. The plethora of Roses, Provence and otherwise, however makes it hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.
Whispering Angel, Miraval and AIX are 3 Provence Roses that in my opinion consistently spot on. The wines are fresh and fruity enough to be enjoyed on their own. At the same time, they possess a medium body weight and dry finish that make them versatile food pairing wines. I am not alone in my opinion it seems, because our shipments from France regularly sell out as soon as they reach our shores.
For this summer and for as long as our stocks are available, we are offering a pack of 6 bottles from this awesome trio.
