Zinfandel vs Primitivo Collection

COUNTRY: Italy
COUNTRY: United States
VARIETAL:Zinfandel / primitivo

Primitivo is grown widely in the Apulia (aka Puglia) regions of Manduria, Gioia del Colle and Salento in southern Italy. Primitivo means "first"and refers to the grape's early ripening vis-a-vis other varietals. In the US, the varietal is known as Zinfandel and is commonly found in California.

Primitivo / Zinfandel is a varietal that is very terroir driven and identifies closely with where it is planted. Broadly speaking, Primitivo are fruit driven, with notes of cherry, strawberry, blackberry and coffee. The wine tends to show earthy and rustic secondary flavours and is usually moderate in alcohol. The wine can sometimes taste sweet. On the other hand, Zinfandel are more robust. They are big, jammy, and rustic, with high alcohol, chewy tannins, and show a sweet finish. Both versions share common traits of power and ripeness of fruits. They are great with anything off the meat aisle from BBQ ribs to juicy steaks. The Primitivo goes well too with tomato based dishes like pasta and pizza.

To help you discover what works for you, we have curated the Zinfandel vs Primitivo Collection. This 6 bottles pack is perfect as it gives you the chance to taste them side by side. The labels we chose show off subtleties related to terroir which might otherwise be missed if tasted on their own separately. So gather a few friends together (with Covid-19 precautions of course) and have a Zinfandel / Primitivo taste off at home.
