It’s that time of the year where we dig through our sales receipts to uncover our top sellers and present them in our annual Top 40 Best Selling Wines honours roll. This is the third edition of our annual list and we are encouraged by our customers who find the previous years’ lists helpful in their wine pursuits. I suspect also that for some of our customers, the list has become a little bit like a game of Bingo. Where you scroll through the selections and see how many of the wines you have “correctly” drunk in the past year. It's all about earning your bragging rights.

The 2017 list takes on a bigger significance this year as our selection of wines has crossed the thousand label mark. Statistically speaking, the 40 best sellers now represents only about 4% of all the wine labels we sold throughout the year. While compiling the list, we uncovered 2 interesting facts that are worthy of mention. Firstly, even though we have now a sizable selection of large scale producers (read 1 million cases and above) on our website, close to 50% of the wines on the list actually comes from wineries that produce less than 100,000 cases annually. In fact, nearly half of these produce less than 50,000 cases a year. Secondly, we see significantly more repeat purchases of these wines compared to others. Clearly, nowhere is the saying “Small is beautiful” better demonstrated than our Top 40s list. We hope for small winery owners and winemakers who stumble onto this article, this list serves as encouragement that life ain't that bad if you focus on making the good stuff.

I'm the founder and chief wine drinker of Wines Online. As my title suggests, my job is to drink every wine that is placed on my table before we decide if it goes onto our website. This is the best quality control job anyone can ask for. I should know... I was an auditor in my previous profession.
